James Maher is a fine art and studio photographer, a retoucher, and a web designer based in New York City.
James credits his inspiration for photography to his love for the city and its endless supply of personalities to capture and streets to explore. He enjoys the balance that photography provides between the creative and technical sides, as well as the constant problem solving and learning that it involves.
Growing up immersed in the world of computers, his pursuits of both web design and Photoshop came as natural extensions to his photography. He studied them intensely to expand his abilities to create and enhance his images and to market his work, and eventually realized that he could offer these services to help others.
Education:
James originally received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a focus in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Photography and Photoshop began as a hobby, but he decided to pursue them after college once he realized that a career in math was not for him.
He went on to study photography and retouching at the International Center for Photography (ICP) and the School of Visual Arts (SVA), and supplemented his education by assisting commercial photographers in New York.
He now splits his time between his personal photography and a variety of freelance work.
