Does this bridge look familiar? The West Jersey Bridge, or 'the bridge that never was', was the original design for what is now the George Washington Bridge.
The bridge was proposed in 1923 by engineer Gustav Lindenthal as a double decker suspension bridge, with 20 traffic lanes and walkways on the upper level and 12 lanes on the lower level.
But ultimately the bridge was scaled down considerably because of the Great Depression, and the steel towers were left bare, instead of being encased in concrete as the photo above shows. It seems like this was a very good decision.
