Color Photo of A Starry Night, Central Park, Manhattan South, New York, by James Maher Photography

I took the original negative that this print is based on in Central Park at night and during a rainstorm.  The photo itself is of a puddle on the cobblestones being hit by raindrops and reflecting a lamppost and the night sky.

When looking at the negative I couldn't stop thinking of the night sky in "The Starry Night" by van Gogh and the figure in "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, which the lamppost reflection reminded me of.

So I created the swirls of wind at the top of the print with the stars behind them (which are really reflections of the lamppost in the water.)  And I gave the water in the lower 2/3rds of the print a swirling whirlpool feeling that reminded me of Munch's painting.  I also tried to twist the lamppost reflection a slight amount to give it the feeling of a screaming person.

So there you have it.  A homage to van Gogh and Munch in this fairly new medium of digital photography.
