Color Photo of Main Port, Santorini, Greece by James Maher Photography

This photo shows how the towns are built into the cliffside.

I recommend against visiting Santorini in July, August or even early September as the island is hot and overcrowded with people.

However, at the end of September and beginning of October there is a very pleasant amount of people on the island.

When you get off the ferry you are greeted by a roped off section of locals with signs offering amazing deals to their family run hotels (amazing deals only at the end of September).  Prices for these hotels are marked down to a third, the weather is perfect and nothing is too crowded.
